There’s not much I like more than a cheap indie concert at one of my favourite venues. Add beer specials, a sweet band, and a newly purchased outfit, and you may have the perfect night.

Queens indie rockers Freelance Whales made an appearance in Vancouver last night to an eager crowd. There were definitely more people than I expected. Not too many people like to go out on Wednesday nights (shocking), especially when it’s negative 100 outside.

The band was impressively multi-talented. Throughout the show every band member took a turn at the mic, and almost everyone switched instruments at one point. A friend aptly pointed out that this kind of diversity and flexibility wasn’t common, except within indie powerhouse Arcade Fire.

The floor was full enough to make the band difficult to see for those of us under six feet. Everyone was super enthusiastic, but still relaxed due to the nature of the music. This kept the obnoxious traits of concert goers to a minimum. There wasn’t a lot of crazy pushing to get to the front, nor was there too much drink spilling. There were some unfortunate crowd farts that no one was willing to own up to, but such is the nature of concerts.

The Freelance Whales mix sounds to create a unique yet cohesive sound. The harmonizing vocals mixed with occasional banjos and synthesizers produce something that sounds original, but not contrived. It’s super pleasing to the ear, and definitely worth the $13 price tag. Another win for those working hard to bring interesting acts to Vancouver. And judging by the size of the crowd, I wasn’t the only appreciative one.
