Today is the The National Day for Truth and Reconc Today is the The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation—an opportunity to listen, to learn, to reflect, and to reconcile. It is a day to recognize the trauma inflicted on Indigenous people by Canada’s residential school system, and to commit to the process of reconciliation in our own lives.

Here are a few ways you can mark this day in Toronto, with Indigenous-led community events, initiatives, films, art, and more:

🧡Head over to Nathan Phillips Square for the annual Indigenous Legacy Gathering, a vibrant celebration hosted by @tocouncilfire.

🧡Pick up a title from @torontolibrary’s Reading for Reconciliation book list.

🧡Join in community gatherings at @the519, @nativechildoftoronto, and the Native Women’s Resource Centre of Toronto.

🧡Hear from author, educator, and residential school survivor Karen Chaboyer at @batashoemuseum.

🧡Watch a PWYC screening of ‘Night Raiders’, @danisgoulet’s Indigenous dystopian drama at @revuecinema, in support of @irsssbc.

🧡Tune in to radio stations across the country for @downiewenjack’s “A Day to Listen”, a series of reflections on reconciliation with a lineup of special guest speakers.

🧡Visit ‘REDefined: Voices from Turtle Island’, a new group exhibition from @womensartofcan with First Nations, Inuit and Métis artists.

🧡Check out @onf_nfb’s rich collection of Indigenous-made films, including titles from Alanis Obomsawin, @tanyatagaq and more.

🧡Support the work of Indigenous artists like @nativeartssociety, @runningfoxbeads, @nativedivacreations, and @pacha_arts.

🧡Buy an orange shirt @orangeshirtsociety, and learn about Phyllis’ story.

Reconciliation requires an ongoing commitment from us all—today, and every day. We encourage you all to reflect on the steps you can take towards truth and reconciliation, and continue to support Indigenous voices and storyelling on this day and beyond.

After the film’s premiere at #TIFF50, we sat down with Sandra, director @extramelanie and star @neeenze to hear more about bringing this story to screen, the hardships of being the “first” in your field, and how women are resonating with Sandra’s journey.

Don’t miss this gripping true story of resilience and courage, out now in theatres across Canada.
