Film Student/Writer

1. My Polaroid Collection
I started taking polaroids when I was given my first Joycam for my 6th Grade birthday. When I was 14-years-old the only reason I got a job was so I could afford the film for it. These are just a few of my favourites.

2. Was She Pretty? by Leanne Shapton
Despite the drawings being as simplistic as possible, and there only being one sentence or a short paragraph written about each picture, this book still manages to overwhelm me with a painful and heartfelt intensity. It’s beautiful

3. Sealy
I had a stuffed seal that isn’t this one when I was about 4 or 5 living in St. John’s. I called it Sealy and it was a little smaller and also wore a red and white striped scarf. When I moved away, my very spolied friend named Heather somehow convinced me to give it to her as a "going away present". I regretted it throughout my entire life so when I went back last summer I got another stuffed seal. It made me feel 5-years-old again. I think afterwards we went to Tim Horton’s and I got a chocolate milk.

4. Birdy Sewing Scissors
These belonged to my Grandmother. Don’t worry, she’s still around.

5. Valley of the Dolls
I love this movie. My favoruite part of it is that Jacqueline Susann, the writer of the original novel, walked out on it during the opening.

6. Jean Cocteau
Who wouldn’t want to watch a 1946 surrealist opium-induced version of Beauty and the Beast?

7. Paper-Mache Heart
This is something that I made as an art project in Grade 4. When we were assigned the project, which I think was just to make something/anything out of paper-mache, I remember thinking something like, "what the fuck should I do?" so I just randomly put some shit together and it turned out to be a big heart, with a little heart in the middle and two roses on top. Or, as it seems, a diagram of a vagina, complete with a uterus and ovaries. Nice.

8. Drawing Pictures of People while Conversing with them
The best part about doing this is seeing their reaction when they read what I write in their speech-bubble. Everyone always seems surprised like, "Did I actually say that?" (such as Tegan’s reaction in this drawing of her). No one ever seems to remember or pay attention to what they’re actually saying because they’re so focused on the fact that I’m drawing them while talking to them. It’s pretty great.

9. Russian Ushanka Hat
My Grandparents bought this hat from Russian sailors that used to sell them when they docked at the harbour in St. John’s. I’m pretty sure it’s made out of black bear fur. RAWWRR rah rah Rasputin.

10. Kajal Eyeliner
In high school I was good friends with this girl who was Pakistani. She gave me a bunch of this amazing eyeliner and I still use it to this day. I think the "K" is supposed to be pronounced with a hard "G"…but I’m not Pakistani, so…I don’t really know.
