🎬🏳️‍🌈🫦🚬 QUEEN OF THE DEUCE is screening one night only (TONIGHT) at @hotdocs_ cinema, as part of the Toronto Jewish Film Festival, and you should go. Chelly Wilson is a remarkable woman, a New York legend, and her story will blow your mind.

Chelly was a tenacious and queer Jewish Greek-born woman who evaded the Nazis, came to America on her own in 1939, and became a successful entrepreneur, owning and operating several theatres in and around NYC’s 42nd street, or the seedy strip known as The Deuce. Chelly ☝️was also one of the first to screen and produce porn cinema.

Chelly moved in many circles, and played poker late into the night with well-known mobsters. She was a shrewd businesswoman, who was empathetic but tough. Her eclectic apartment sat on top of one of her bustling theatres, vaulted with multiple locks. Inside, rooms with mismatched furniture were full of raucous gatherings, plumes of cigarette smoke, and shoeboxes crammed full of money. Chelly wasn’t always likable, but she was undeniably impressive, and she made a big impression on young Valerie. “It’s a portrait that does her honour… It’s not all complimentary.”

This multimedia art exhibit focuses on the journey of Toronto Pride from 1970 to the present day.
Full of archival photographs, print media, memorabilia and writings by community leaders and the Toronto 2SLGBTQ+ community - this is the perfect way to connect to queer culture this month.

The exhibit will spotlight beloved and vital organizations like @buddiesto, @blm_to, @caseyhouseto, @2spiritstoronto, and more—interspersed with photographs, t-shirts, buttons, issues of @xtramagazine, protest signs, zines, and posters. This exhibit is an incredible way to learn about the history of Pride in our city.
