Once I knew that Cassie was going to be autistic, like me, the only way I could possibly do that with any authenticity was to write my own experience as truthfully as possible, which meant allowing my brain to do exactly what it wanted to do. So I just… let go. I allowed myself to just be on the page, without shame and without hiding. I let Cassie have my weird behaviours, my strange way of speaking, my obsessions and emotions and random metaphors and repetitive habits that I tend to hide so that I’m more ‘likeable’. 🎬🏳️‍🌈🫦🚬 QUEEN OF THE DEUCE is screening one night only (TONIGHT) at @hotdocs_ cinema, as part of the Toronto Jewish Film Festival, and you should go. Chelly Wilson is a remarkable woman, a New York legend, and her story will blow your mind.

Chelly was a tenacious and queer Jewish Greek-born woman who evaded the Nazis, came to America on her own in 1939, and became a successful entrepreneur, owning and operating several theatres in and around NYC’s 42nd street, or the seedy strip known as The Deuce. Chelly ☝️was also one of the first to screen and produce porn cinema.

Chelly moved in many circles, and played poker late into the night with well-known mobsters. She was a shrewd businesswoman, who was empathetic but tough. Her eclectic apartment sat on top of one of her bustling theatres, vaulted with multiple locks. Inside, rooms with mismatched furniture were full of raucous gatherings, plumes of cigarette smoke, and shoeboxes crammed full of money. Chelly wasn’t always likable, but she was undeniably impressive, and she made a big impression on young Valerie. “It’s a portrait that does her honour… It’s not all complimentary.”
