CAREER TIPS
education – I’m not talking necessarily about university etc, but with whatever career you choose to pursue make sure you educate yourself in it to the highest degree. It gives you a real confidence as well as respect for the work.
thoughtfulness/empathy – think before you act. Try to understand where others are coming from even if you completely disagree with them. Analyse a situation, ask yourself why someone wants you to do something, not just what that something is. Think.
Asserting yourself – for young women especially. We are so determined to have people like us that we think we have to be “nice” all the time. We are afraid to say “no” if someone asks us to do something, and women are far less likely to ask for a raise in a job than men. Realise that you are smart, that your opinions matter, and that it isn’t a bad thing to speak up and share your thoughts. In the end, chances are people will like and respect you more for it, than if you just let people walk all over you.
Professionalism – treat the work seriously. Show up on time, respect the rules, dress appropriately. Take responsibility for your actions, apologise for your mistakes, and get your work done to deadline.
Have a sense of humour – life is funny. Yes, we have to take our work seriously, but if you can laugh at yourself that makes many situations far more tolerable. Remember that this is our one shot at living, this is no dress rehearsal. So enjoy moments, get to know your peers, and laugh.
