Betsey Johnson at Brant House – the real fun of fashion week

At first blush, the crowd was nothing more than bridge and tunnel folk, braces and bang, and fashion students lounging back on an empty runway air-humping to a remixed Brittany Womanizer beat…

Betsey’s gals were late for the ball and the crowd was more pumpkin than carriage – complaining of sore feet, double fisting brew, and asking me for all of my gum wtf?!

The midnight hour struck as The Chordettes chimed in with Mr. Sandman – and the crowd transformed…crinolines and sequins and girls with faces as sweet as buttercream icing.

Betsey Johnson Spring/Summer ’09 collection overflowed with traditional Betsey prints. Bold floral dresses and silhouettes of ruffled crinoline flounced down the runway. The saccharine-sweetness simmered, when cut with edgier nautical pieces – much more pirate then sailor.

This years favorite 50 year old was also on everybody’s mind (sorry, Oprah you had yours); Barbie, had her place on last nights runway. A blonde cute as Coppertone, paid homage to ol’ Bar, wearing a vintage inspired black and white striped bodysuit –as seen on the earliest of dolls… an outfit responsible for many-a-fetish I’m sure.

I think the Twilight crowd must have gone home early, after the show, style was definitely in attendance. The most noticeable thèmes des ensembles were vintage sequin tops and jackets, as well as oversize hideous knits ironically draped over petite pretty frames. Jersey jumpers in bold prints shook to the beats of DJ Princess Superstar on the post-show runway and since it was Brant house, we even bumped into some pro-ballers avec bottle service. Shawn Marion from the Raptors was sparkling in his own gear – clearly not vintage sequins, but the man sure can wear diamonds…
