1.What does a typical Thursday look like for you, starting from when you wake up – to heading to bed?
9 am- Wake-up. Watch a little Rachel Ray (still deciding whether or not I love or hate her)
11-5 pm- At work in the gallery. (Install new shows, work on art inventories, work directly with clients and prepare for upcoming shows and events)
6 pm- Drinks with the girls and maybe a little shopping (working in Yorkville is both a blessing and a curse)
8 pm- A quick workout at the gym if I’m not totally beat.
10 pm – Reality television fix .
2.What was your first job out of school?
My job at Ingram Gallery is my first since graduating Queen’s University in 2006. I spent a few summers volunteering and working at the Ingram Gallery on a part time basis prior to starting here full time. I also volunteered at a Toronto based auction house before being hired onto the Ingram staff.
3.What are the 3 skills you require most to do your job well?
You have to be a team player and creative. Plus, you have to be able to carry around and hang art in high heels.
4.What do you love most about your career?
I love, love, love working with and being surrounded by art. I consider myself very lucky to work in a profession that allows me to be hands on with art. Also being in the presence of such amazing and creative artists is an aspect of this job that is very stimulating.
5. If a woman wanted to get into this business, what are your recommendations of how they should start?
Although working in the arts in Toronto is quite competitive, do not be discouraged. Get involved as much as you can. Volunteer your time and get to know all those involved in the industry. The art world is smaller than you think! I also found that getting a post graduate certificate from Humber College after Queen’s was extremely helpful in realizing what career I wanted to pursue.
6.Do you have any warnings?
This is a very dynamic business in all facets, so expect the unexpected. I have found that you have to be adaptive to different people in different situations and able to just go with the flow when the going gets tough.
7. If you could try a different career on for a year, what would it be?
If I were to consider another career I think it would be somewhere in the realm of magazine publications. I love fashion and interior decorating visuals, so a job where I could help produce visually appealing magazines comes across to me as both interesting and challenging.
