There was no shortage of bikinis, six pack abs, sports and music at Center of Gravity in Kelowna this past weekend. Western Canada’s largest beach festival hosted over 20,000 people during the three-day event and people were treated to non-stop entertainment. City Park played host to the festival and there was no shortage of action. From beach volleyball to Motor cross freestyle competitions to guys tricking out on BMX bikes there was plenty to see and do. The festival also showcased some the country’s biggest bands, as Chromeo, Dragonette, and Calvin Harris entertained thousands each night.

The party began July 29th with disappointing news for fans of Busta Rhymes. He was scheduled to perform that evening but cancelled. Reports say that his flight was unable to leave New York due to heavy storms. He later tweeted “Once again everybody that came out 2 Kelowna, Canada it wasn’t the promoters fault and it wasn’t our fault it was the thunder storms.” But the night wasn’t a bust as DJ A-trak stepped up and played an extended set for the crowd. “It sucks that Busta didn’t show up but A-trak killed it so I’m happy,” said one partygoer.

But Center of Gravity is not just about the music: pro volleyball players, basketball teams, and freestyle mountain bikers competed for prizes and bragging rights. And of course what beach festival would be complete without a bikini contest? Girls from as far away as Calgary competed in their sexiest swimsuits for the top prize of $1,000.

Unlike previous weekend festivals in Kelowna, police say that the event went rather smoothly. Although some people did get taken away in stretchers, almost all issues were heat related. The average temperature hovered around 32 degrees during the weekend. All and all Center of Gravity looked to be a complete success. You were hard pressed to find anyone not having a good time. Whether people came for the sports, music, or the beer gardens, there were no complaints, just happy people working on their tans.
