For such a self-proclaimed healthy city, I’m surprised Vancouver doesn’t have more brown rice sushi joints. Don’t get me wrong, they’re definitely around. In fact, they’ve been steadily increasing. But most places still only offer the white alternative, which means I get excited when I find a new place that offers brown rice.

Dream Sushi (4401 Main St.) is one of those places, plus it has some super cool fusion rolls. It’s on the upper levels of South Main, in an area I’ve neglected to explore.

Dream is cozy, to say the least. You may not always be rubbing elbows with your neighbour, but don’t expect a wealth of leg room. Also they always seem to have one of the biggest booths reserved. And there’s always staff sitting there. Even at peak hours with customers waiting, apparently. Maybe they use it as an office/break room? Who knows.

The brown rice costs $0.50 extra per roll, which isn’t thrilling, but the sushi is good enough to warrant the charge. The standard California roll wasn’t oozing with mayo and the spicy tuna had a nice texture.

They specialize in crazy fusion rolls, so grab one or two to share between your group. The Snow White Roll (tempura prawn with avocado and coconut) was a definite hit, with a little bit of nuttiness from the coconut topping.

Don’t forget dessert, also offered in sushi form. Dream is known for their dessert roll that features cream cheese, fresh fruit, and…pop rocks? That’s right, pop rock sushi. It’s worth a trip out there just to try this house specialty!
