Which write is right? Which words need to be heard? Whose English makes you tingle-ish? Whose pen is… Okay, I’ll stop.

The Write Club Toronto is the only Canadian chapter (so far) of the larger Write Club organization, started in Chicago, that puts on “live lit” events in cities across North America. And their next event is Jan. 15!

Basically, writers come together and duke it out (yes, with words! No, not with “yo mama” jokes!) with opposing ideas. They each have just seven minutes to present their work, and at the end the audience gets to vote for which writer or argument they liked better. There are four rounds, each with two writers. Tickets are $12, but here’s the upside: it all goes to charity! The winning writer of each round gets to take a portion of that night’s proceeds and make a donation to a charity of his or her choice (an estimated $100 – $300 each, once the money is divided equally).

This is a pretty unique and fun way to do a couple of things: 1.) Go to a bar (the event, which happens the third Tuesday of every month, takes place at Dundas West’s cozy The Garrison). 2.) Hear work from some of the city’s top emerging writers (our very own Grown-Ass Woman, Monica Heisey, is one of the competitors this time! Check out the rest of them here). 3.) Exercise your right to vote…on something (the next mayoral election isn’t exactly tomorrow, you guys).

Sounds good to us!
