You may still be waiting with baited breath for the new season of Mad Men to premiere, but in the mean time, get your fix of the period drama with Banana Republic’s “Mad Men” capsule collection.

Yesterday, we stopped by at Banana Republic’s Yorkville store for a little breakfast and pre-shopping. We dined on hardboiled eggs with truffle, noshed on smoked salmon and pumpernickel sandwiches, and even knocked back some alcohol free mimosas (it was 9 in the morning, after all!), while checking out the best of what this collection had to offer.

A collaboration between Emmy Award winning costume designer Janie Bryant (responsible for the dapper and darling looks on the show), AMC and Banana Republic, the Mad Men collection brings us back to an age where everyone dressed up, no matter the occasion.

We were impressed by the usage of luxe fabrics (these are pieces that’ll last you a while!), as well as the true-to-the-period shapes. It’s gorgeous and effortlessly chic–silk tie-neck blouses, high waisted skirts and prettily prim dresses that’ll make you feel just like Betty, Joan or Peggy. In particular, we adored the belted leopard print trench coat, as well as many of the ladylike dresses in silks, wools and taffetas.

Statement accessories such as print scarves and a pair of leopard print pump heels have us buying the veneer of the early 60’s American dream, without it seeming too much like a costume piece. After all, that’s why Mad Men’s sartorial interpretation of the time period is so successful–it’s retro, but still surprisingly modern.
