10 am “Marco Sassone: His Boots and Other Works” Opening @ Bata Shoe Museum, 327 Bloor St. W. 73-year-old knighted Italian painter Marco Sassone counts Sophia Loren, Ella Fitzgerald, Tina Turner, and Luciano Pavarotti as his fans and collectors, though as a budding artist he sold his paintings on scrap pieces of plywood to tourists in Florence. His latest body of work is a selection of 10 oil paintings – nine new and one from the 1990s – that brings to life his love of fashion and footwear in many forms: through an old, worn-out pair of the artist’s own boots, through a pair of shoes worn by a homeless man, and through those worn by a well-heeled woman at a party. Runs until September 5.

8 pm Spelling Bae @ The Ossington, 61 Ossington Ave. The ultimate spelling competition. Official Canadian spelling bee rules observed. Spell words, drink beer, compete for glory. Sign-up at 8 pm, Spelling Bae at 8:30.
