Montreal Hit List – Honheehonhee, Deborah Willis Lecture, System of a Down Tribute and more!

WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 8

8:30pm. Open Mic @ Comedy Nest, 2313 St-Catherine West. Montreal has a reputation for stellar comedy – that’s why it’s important to get out and support our amateurs and comedy newbies, they could be the next big thing! Each Wednesday, Comedy Nest hosts a fantastic open mic. Come out for a laugh! $5.

THURSDAY FEBRUARY 9

9:30pm. Honheehonhee + Young Empires @ Le Divan Orange, 4234 St-Laurent. Montreal’s own (and very intriguingly-named) Honheehonhee headline an evening of jams at Divan Orange, accompanied by Toronto-based band Young Empires. Indie, rock, pop, electronic – between these two bands, they’ve got it all! $10.

FRIDAY FEBRUARY 10

6:30pm. Speaking of Photography Lecture Series: Deborah Willis @ York Amphitheatre (Room EV-1.605), EV Building, Concordia University, 1515 St-Catherine West. Artist and NYU professor Deborah Willis will be giving a lecture titled Posing Beauty in African and African American Culture. Principally, Willis will explore the contested ways in which African and African American beauty has been represented in art. Free.

8:30pm. Little Birdie @ Le Cagibi, 5490 St-Laurent. When was the last time you went to Le Cagibi for a show? Exactly. Their little back room stage, all quaint and cozy, awaits you for a performance by singer-songwriter Little Birdie. Sapo and ‘The Two Che’ will open the show. $10.

10pm. Vous etes des animaux 4 @ Le Belmont, 4483 St-Laurent. Hosted by Samouraïs des jungles urbaines, Le Belmont presents Vous etes des animaux 4, in which guests are encouraged to arrive in animal costumes (the crazier/more intricate, the better!) and dance the night away with the likes of Vancouver’s The Funk Hunters, Elo!i & Heights, Giant Octopus and more! Free before 11pm, $5 after.

SATURDAY FEBRUARY 11

9pm. Tribute to System of a Down @ Club Soda, 1225 St-Laurent. This may just be me and my weird high school music tendencies, but System of a Down was pretty hard and pretty rad back in the day. Opened Fist, a particularly great System of a Down cover band, take the stage at Club Soda for a night of, well, moshing and singing along to Aerials. You in? $10.
