Vintage picker Acacia Christensen stocks plus-sized vintage for her line Fat Chance Fashion.

SDTC: How did you get started picking vintage?

Acacia Christensen: I got started picking vintage when I was realizing how difficult it is for me to find plus sized clothing in styles that I enjoy and I knew they existed out there. It originated with me for picking for myself and then, with weight fluctuations, I ended up with a large array of sizing and decided to stem out from there and start buying anything I really liked above a size 12 all the way up to whatever sizes I could find, but well curated.

SDTC: What’s your favourite piece you’ve ever found?

AC: My favourite piece that I’ve ever found is tied between three pieces. The first is a red deadstock 1960s long sleeved dress, it’s fire engine red and it seemed very “Canadian” and I couldn’t part with it so it’s part of my own personal collection now. The other two are a wood grained pattern blazer in gold and black, and a gold specked tier dress in a size 28 which I still have for sale.

SDTC: What advice do you have for aspiring young business owners?

AC: The only advice I have for young aspiring business owners and entrepreneurs is to just get out there with your idea and go for it, start small if you have to.

SDTC: What’s the best reaction you’ve ever had to one of your pieces?

AC: Honestly it’s anytime a fellow big girl looks through my stock and they tell me how excited they are that they can find stuff that fits properly. I’ve been between a size 14 and 22 for my entire teenage and adult life and it’s really stressful to shop for things that just look amazing.

SDTC: Why should people come to the Flea?

AC: Come to the flea to support local business owners selling you unique things that you want! And to buy clothing from me of course!
